St. Michael's is recruiting new volunteers who want to become Altar Servers. Children and teens who have received First Communion and attend Mass regularly are welcome to serve. We will train you!
Our parish is deeply grateful for the commitment of our Altar Servers; their service and dediction are an important part of our parish life. The place of the Altar Server in liturgical celebrations remains one of prominence and distinction, and therefore, our Altar Servers learn all matters concerning liturgical worship and strive to grasp their inner spiritual meaning. Their role, through assisting the priest and deacon, is to bring the assembly to a fuller understanding of the liturgy and a greater love for God.
Altar Servers are chosen from the faithful who display a desire to participate in a more intimate way during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. All registered parishioners who have received their First Communion and attend Mass on a regular baisis are welcome to serve. All candidates must have attended one training session, and have the commitment and ability to perform this role with reverence.
This ministry is open to boys and girls from the 5 th grade and above. Altar servers serve at all weekend liturgies and special celebrations throughout the year, such as weekday morning masses, funerals, and memorial masses. The various tasks of a altar server usually include assisting with the book of prayers when the Presider reads from it, carrying various objects in procession, such as the processional cross and candles, and perhaps assist in cleaning up after Mass. The main task of the server is to model liturgical prayer with grace and reverence and enter whole-heartedly into the public worship of the community. Altar servers are expected to be familiar with the ebb and flow of liturgy, to anticipate each movement, cue and need. Altar server training sessions are offered throughout the year with the expectation of regular attendance.
